Nigeria rated fastest air travel market in Africa Nigeria has been identified by travel and hospitality experts as the fastest growing air travel market in Africa recording 1.5 million visitors last year. Experts told THISDAY that studies done on the industry have indicated that Nigeria’s hospitality industry has overtaken that of South Africa, Mauritius and China. Behind Tin-Can’s Endemic Traffic

“The traffic congestion on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, especially around the Seaport is not only unacceptable, but also injurious to the nation’s economy,” says the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen. As anyone who has travelled through the Tin-Can Island end of the expressway would attest, the notorious traffic gridlock is a source of untold commuter anguish and misery. While many have blamed the endemic traffic situation on the deteriorating condition of the road, a closer look at activities of the Police, Navy, and Ports Security responsible for traffic control at Tin-Can’s two gates would reveal something much more worrisome. The stretch of road from the Mile 2 interchange to the Liverpool Road Bridge and down to Apapa Ports is the locus. Besides the clusters of tank farms, trailer garages, factories, large car lots, and other businesses that generate traffic, this stretch of road provides the link to Nigeria’s second largest seaport - the Tin-Can Island port, and to Nigeria

OVERCROWDED BRT BUSES IN CITY TRAFFIC Anyone who has boarded BRT buses in Lagos would bear witness to this report of overcrowded BRT buses plying Lagos roads. Regardless of the fact that BRT buses are provided with hand rails for standing passengers, it still makes no difference when compared with the MOLUEs which the BRTs came to replace. It is very well known that overcrowding creates room for pickpocketing and other inconveniences that remind commuters of the days of the MOLUE. Again in the event of a crash, overcrowded buses record more casualties. This must not be ruled out. The BRT is a wonderful innovation in city transport that must not be abused. Overcrowding is a form of abuse.

LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS AND EXTORTION AT TINCAN ISLAND PORT

The rate at which the Police, Navy, and the unions extort money from truckers at the ports is very alarming. Anyone who has passed the Tincan end of Oshodi Apapa Expressway at any time would agree with me that traffic holdup has turned the expressway into a mere car lot. To a layman, the holdup is as a result of too many trucks trying to gain access to the ports at the same time. But the truth is that the holdup is created by law enforcement agents at the ports entry point who extort money from truck drivers before they are allowed to go in. Those who pay are assisted to overtake those who refuse to pay. You can now imagine a truck trying to force its way to the front after paying some 5000 naira bribe. sometimes the trucks would have to bypass about 10 or more other trucks before getting to the front. There is always a normal queue but the police and others hardly allow it to move because those in the normal queue do not always pay. And that is how the long queue is left to grow causi
