LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS AND EXTORTION AT TINCAN ISLAND PORT

The rate at which the Police, Navy, and the unions extort money from truckers at the ports is very alarming. Anyone who has passed the Tincan end of Oshodi Apapa Expressway at any time would agree with me that traffic holdup has turned the expressway into a mere car lot. To a layman, the holdup is as a result of too many trucks trying to gain access to the ports at the same time. But the truth is that the holdup is created by law enforcement agents at the ports entry point who extort money from truck drivers before they are allowed to go in. Those who pay are assisted to overtake those who refuse to pay. You can now imagine a truck trying to force its way to the front after paying some 5000 naira bribe. sometimes the trucks would have to bypass about 10 or more other trucks before getting to the front. There is always a normal queue but the police and others hardly allow it to move because those in the normal queue do not always pay. And that is how the long queue is left to grow causing endless traffic holdup on a daily basis.
